SEATTLE, Wash. -- Tea company David Rio in San Francisco was honored last weekend with a first-ever win at the Specialty Coffee Association of America’s annual convention. In recognition of the fact that tea is increasingly important to coffee shop sales, the SCAA created a new category for specialty prepared tea or chai beverages for the 27th exposition.

David Rio’s Tea Frost Premium Tea Frappe not only won the New Product category, it also was named the People’s Choice winner based on votes by attendees. The blend, which is made with organic spices, is based on David Rio’s Tiger Spice Chai. Chai sells well in the fall and winter explains Erin-Kate Whitcomb, Chai-rector of sales, “our innovation is a summer alternative.” The blend is a healthy alternative to fruity ice cream drinks, said Whitcomb. David Rio developed its own all-natural non-dairy creamer for the line. The mixes can be consumed by lactose intolerant consumers. Flavors include Tea Frost Matcha, Chocolate Assam (from the Banaspaty garden), Tea Frost Earl Grey, Tea Frost English Breakfast. The blends are mixed with ice.
