Washington-based Harmony Chai has voluntarily recalled its chai tea due to improper processing of the beverage and potential contaminated with Clostridium botulinum bacteria, the FDA announced last Friday.
Harmony Chai issued a voluntary recall of 2 products - its concentrated black spiced and decaffeinated roobius chai teas. The Washington State Department of Agriculture conducted tests of these products and showed that both had been insufficiently processed and therefore is likely to be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum contamination.
Though rare, the bacterium can cause severe illness and even death. Even if the product does not appear spoiled, consumers are discouraged from consuming these products, and instead are encouraged to return them to their point of purchase for a full refund. Currently, no illnesses or issues stemming from the consumption of this product have been reported.
The teas have been distributed through farmers markets, grocery stores, and cafes in Washington.
