Earlier this summer The Tea Spot of Boulder, Colo. introduced Premium Tea Sachets, biodegradable pyramid sachets containing some of the company’s most popular loose leaf teas. The new line was unveiled at the 2014 World Tea Expo with the foodservice industry as the primary target; CEO Maria Uspenski assessed that the potential was strong enough to move the retail launch ahead a few months.
The Tea Spot received a research grant from the USDA that allowed them to investigate improvements to the shape and material of tea sachets based on customer reaction.* The company says the open weave of the mesh allows for freer infusion of the whole leaf teas inside.
“One of our goals for 2014 was to further our emphasis of making fresh premium tea convenient and available in single-serve form,”said Jessica Kochik, CMO of The Tea Spot, in a press release. "Not all of our customers have the time and facilities to steep loose leaf teas all the time. They want our handcrafted loose leaf teas in a form that’s even more convenient to make on-the-go, or during their busy morning routines, without sacrificing on flavor or the eco-friendly aspect of our loose leaf teas. This inspired us to make our top-selling whole leaf teas available in biodegradable pyramid tea sachets.”
The Premium Tea Sachets are available in samplers of four tins with four sachets in each. There are ten different flavors in all.

* The Tea Spot received a grant of $460,000 from the USDA-NIFA Small Business Innovation Research (SPIR) Marketing and Trade Program for the years 2011-2013. "Optimizing Marketing Strategy and Consumer Connection for a Corn-Based Compostable To-Go Tea Filter in Mass Foodservice" analyzed their Brewlux® to-go tea filters to refine the marketing strategy. One-on-one interviews with consumers helped inform the company on tea-drinker preferences for premium whole leaf teas and eco-friendly disposability, as well as common needs such as fast prep time, convenience, and low-mess tea making gear.
