Tea Capital Shizuoka to Hold Opening Ceremony at World Tea Expo

World Tea Expo returns to the Las Vegas Convention Center March 24-26, and this year, the opening of the Expo Hall will be celebrated with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by Tea Capital Shizuoka.

On Tuesday, March 25 at 11:45 am, attendees can gather at the World Tea Expo Hall entrance on the second floor to witness Tea Capital Shizuoka's opening ceremony, which will feature a Japanese folk song as well as the ribbon cutting.

Shizuoka is a prefecture located in the middle of Japan that boasts the largest tea growing area in the country. It is located 100 miles west from Tokyo and is home to Mount Fuji.

Thanks to underground water from Mt. Fuji, a temperature difference between the mountains, and farmland located at a high sea level, Shizuoka is the best place for tea farming in Japan. Tea leaves grow slower here than in other places, and they absorb minerals from the rich soil, which leads to the leaves containing a lot of umami. Since Samurai gave up holding swords 150 years ago, they have been farming tea in Shizuoka, and it is the biggest producer as well as the biggest consumer in Japan.

Besides producing popular teas like matcha, the prefecture also takes pride in its Fukamushi (long steam) technology, which creates sencha tea (a Japanese green tea) with a beautiful color and rich umami flavor.

Tea Capital Shizuoka is bringing a pavilion to World Tea Expo with 10 booths showcasing everything from its various types of matcha, sencha, and hojicha (a smokier Japanese green tea) to sweets made of tea materials. The goal is to spread the taste of this Japanese tea and history to the world.

Here are the 10 Japanese companies exhibiting in the Shizuoka Pavilion:

  • Harada Tea
  • Homme Asakichi Shoten Co., Ltd.
  • Ichikawa-en
  • Kanehachi Chaen Co., Ltd.
  • Marumatsu Tea Co., Ltd.
  • Matsushita Tea Garden
  • Ogurinouen Co., Ltd.
  • Osada Seicha Co., Ltd.
  • Oyaizu Seicha International Japanese Tea Co., Ltd.
  • Yamama Masudaen Co., Ltd.

The Shizuoka team is also interested in organizing tours that combine exploring the prefecture with the experience of the local tea processing industry. "Shizuoka has opened a research facility specializing in tea and promoting the improvement of tea plant varieties," said the Shizuoka team. "We would love many people to come to Shizuoka and experience the taste of tea and culture behind it."
