In January, Dr. Andrew Weil announced his founding of the e-commerce Japanese tea company MatchaKari to further showcase the myriad benefits and rich tradition of matcha. Recognized for its health benefits, matcha now has the wellness endorsement of Dr. Weil. “I first learned about Japanese tea when I lived with families in Tokyo and Kobe in 1959,” explained Weil. “I always loved the beauty of the matcha tea ceremony and am impressed by the numerous health benefits of green tea.”

Matcha – the special powdered form of green tea, is ten times more potent in antioxidant activity than standard bagged green tea. However, Weil soon discovered that not all Matcha products are equal. Much matcha sold here is substandard, lacking the vibrant green color and rich flavor it should have. “I had a difficult time finding matcha like the tea I enjoyed in Japan, so I decided to form a company that sourced its tea directly from the region of Japan that produces the finest matcha,” said Weil.

While MatchaKari soft launched in early 2017, Weil focused on other branded obligations before prioritizing his position with MatchaKari, the e-commerce site purveying prestige matcha teas and tea accessories. First harvested by Japanese farmers over 1,000 years ago, this powdered green tea made from the whole leaf was historically utilized by Zen monks to help them focus during long periods of sitting meditation. Samurai warriors used it before battle to gain mental alertness, clarity, and stamina. Today, many people from around the world enjoy a bowl of matcha for its delicious taste and positive effects on mood, energy, and general health.

MatchaKari sources its teas from the birthplace of Japanese tea traditions, the fields around Uji City near Kyoto, Japan. MatchaKari has a dedicated mission to seek, source and procure excellent, affordable matcha tea suitable for everyday use, while celebrating ancient matcha culture, and enhancing the wellness lifestyles of its community.
