Liverpool Leads in Tea

Brits are known for love of tea, but the leading city for consumption is Liverpool, where residents drink an average of 1,460 cups yearly, according to a recent study. English Breakfast was named the favorite of most UK tea-drinkers, and 38 percent of those surveyed say it’s best with milk but no sugar. Coworkers make the worst tea, respondents added; while spouses and partners brew the best. The favorite time to start sipping: 8:40 a.m. “Despite the market being flooded by extravagant blends and flavors, it appears good old builder’s tea is what we reach for,” said a representative of Redring, the makers of instant boiling water taps that conducted the survey. The most voracious consumers of herbal teas are Scots; Redring’s study found that Glasgow residents drink an average of 438 cups of herbal and fruit teas yearly. (Scots are the most prolific coffee-drinkers in the UK; Edinburgh residents lead by drinking 1,095 cups per year.) The average Brit consumes 66,685 cups of tea in a lifetime, beating the average of 50,589 cups of coffee. They also spend an average $44,808 on tea and coffee in a lifetime. In a typical year, that means $572 on tea and coffee in restaurants and shops and another $154 USD on hot drinks at home or the office, Redring found. The company surveyed 1,500 people. Here’s a hint to Liverpool’s particular love of tea, however: The city of just under half a million people is home to the oldest Chinese community in Europe, whose ancestors arrived as seamen in the 19th century and today comprise 1.7 percent of the city's population.
