The fast-growing and highly rated Hakkasan Group of restaurants, nightclubs and resorts will launch its Michelin-starred contemporary dim-sum teahouses in Houston and Honolulu in 2016.
The group, which is headquartered in London and Las Vegas, first opened its Yauatcha dim-sum concept in London in 2004, and has since expanded with locations in Bengalru, Mumbai and New Delhi, India. The tearoom prides itself in “an exceptional range of Chinese and Indian teas.” According to the company Yauatcha “offers an all-day grazing experience, specializing in modern authentic dim sum, as well as wok-friendly dishes and other small eats.” The concept is a modern reinterpretation of the traditional Chinese teahouse with macarons and chocolate a la carte and retail.
The new tearooms will open in Tier 1 malls, according to a report in Bloomberg which described the Yauatcha as “more casual and less expensive than Hakkasan restaurants, known for fine dining and high glamour, with prices to match.”
“At Yauatcha you can just pop in for a cup of tea and a pastry or a business meeting,” Nick McCabe, Hakkasan Group president told Bloomberg. “There is huge potential because it’s more scalable than Hakkasan. It’s always been my favorite brand in the portfolio,” he said.
In Houston, Yauatcha is partnering with Simon Property Group Inc. at the Houston Galleria. In Honolulu, it will open at the International Market Place, which is being developed by Taubman Centers Inc. and CoastWood Capital Group LLC with Queen Emma Land Co.
“It’s a great way for us to take the brand into the U.S.,” McCabe told Bloomberg. “We have to learn how the U.S. responds to the food offering and the experience. Once we perfect it, we can take it to the U.S. market.”
Revenue at Hakkasan has grown 600% since 2012. The firm employs 5,000 and operates 50 establishments with several London locations and U.S. outlets in Miami, New York, Las Vegas, and San Francisco, as well as clubs and resorts in Mykonos, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Doha and Shanghai.
