8th Wonder Tea renewed its partnership with 1% for the Planet and selected the Mojave Desert Land Trust as the beneficiary – just before Earth Day 2023, which takes place April 22 this year.
1% for the Planet is a global movement inspiring businesses and individuals to support environmental solutions through annual membership and everyday actions.
Representing a global network of business, individuals and environmental organizations tackling the planet’s most pressing environmental issues, 8th Wonder selected the Mojave Desert Land Trust in order to support the local Southern California community while at the same time making a global impact.
A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the Mojave Desert Land Trust’s (MDLT) mission is to protect and care for lands with natural, scenic, and cultural value within the entire California portion of the eastern Mojave and Colorado Deserts – nearly 26 million acres. It has cultivated a multi-faceted conservation strategy that uses land acquisition, restoration, stewardship, plant cultivation and education to ensure the long-term preservation of the California desert.
“As a Southern California based company, we are very excited about working directly in our Mojave Desert backyard on ecological applications which have extremely beneficial implications for the planet as a whole” said Reed Rush, CEO of 8th Wonder Tea. “This was an easy choice since I live in the Mojave Desert in Joshua Tree and want to do everything in my power to protect our very unique biodiversity and preserve the rare beauty of the desert landscape (which inspires me every day) while ensuring future generations are also able to appreciate and become responsible stewards of this land.”
MDLT acquires parcels within national parks and preserves, wilderness areas, areas of critical environmental concern, and wildlife linkage corridors. Since its founding in 2006, MDLT has conserved over 100,000 acres, conveying more tracts of land to the National Park Service than any other non-profit nationwide. Deepening its conservation mission, it established the Native Plant Conservation Program and Mojave Desert Seed Bank in 2016. The nursery has grown more than 100,000 native plants for restoration and community use. The Mojave Desert Land Trust also aims to ensure the California desert remains an inter-connected ecosystem that works to support biodiversity and human life.
“MDLT is grateful for the support of 8th Wonder Tea and their customers, and we are proud to be their environmental partner through 1% for the Planet,” said Steven Talbot, director of philanthropy at the Mojave Desert Land Trust. “8th Wonder’s commitment will help us continue the critical work of preserving the California desert.”
Rush added: “Author E.F. Schumacher of Small Is Beautiful coined the maxim ‘thinking globally but acting locally’ and this is something I believe we should all take to heart. By working on impacting the health of our local communities, environmentally and socially, we can ultimately address major issues of climate change, ecological vulnerability and more, which often feel so staggering and overwhelming – especially to younger people like myself. I think it’s critical that we remind ourselves how every small step in the right direction, no matter how minute on an individual level, creates positive change in the aggregate.”
