Lady Patricia Farmer’s latest book, Tea Under the Palms: From Leaf to Kettle - A History of Tea and the Art of a Proper Tea Party, debuted this month from Beaufort Books.
Farmer’s mother introduced her to the ritual of afternoon tea at The Plaza Hotel's Palm Court in New York – an iconic, elegant venue that serves high-end breakfast, afternoon tea and evening cocktails – when she was just seven years old.
“I wrote this book to extol the pleasures of my own habit of afternoon tea in the hope of drawing others into it," said Farmer.
In the book, Farmer writes about the history of tea, dating back to its origins in China, its many varieties and their nuances, tea preparation and techniques.
She also covers ideal edible accompaniments to a proper tea service, tea rituals and traditions, the etiquette of taking tea, a survey of the finest tea rooms around the globe, and recipes for sweets and savories that complete a perfect tea service.
“Tea, and afternoon tea in particular, is a small pleasure but an unparalleled one,” shared Farmer. “Wars have been waged, royal marriages arranged, companies formed, and world problems solved over a perfect cup of tea. It's neither inebriating, expensive, nor fattening, and yet there's nothing quite so effective for regaining one's equilibrium and perspective – or simply relaxing.”
The new book features commentary by a host of experts and dozens of fun facts and entertaining anecdotes, as well as beautiful photographs.
Farmer is a historian, best-selling author, business person and former model, who has had a lifelong fascination with the glamour, magic and history of New York City’s quintessential Plaza Hotel, as well as a love of tea.
