Less than a year after its inception, the Global Tea Initiative will host its 2nd Annual Colloquium, Thursday, Jan. 19 at the University of California Davis, in Davis, Calif. The Colloquium will feature a full day of events, with a tea tasting in the morning and a number of talks in the afternoon. The theme of the event is “Taste, Smell, Sight, Hearing, Touch: The Sensory Aspects of Tea.”
The morning tea tasting will be presided over by tea master Wingchi Ip, director of the China Tea Association, and takes place in the Robert Mondavi Sensory Theatre from 10–11:30 a.m. The afternoon program commences with welcoming remarks by Katharine Burnett, Founding Director of UC Davis Global Tea Initiative, and continues with talks and Q&As including:
Environmental and Management Effects on Tea Quality – Selena Ahmed, Montana State University
A Scientific and Cultural Quest of Taiwan Tea, Aroma and Taste – Kai-Hsien Chen, National Taiwan University
Coolie Poesis: Plantation Sounds and Labor Heritage on Sri Lanka’s Tea Estates – Mythri Jegathesan, Santa Clara University
Tea Perceived: From a Ninth-Century Shipwreck to a Nineteenth Century Snuff Bottle – Victor Mair, University of Pennsylvania.

The Global Tea Initiative was launched in 2016 as part of the university’s research in agriculture, health, science, humanities, and social science. It complements UC Davis’s already renowned viticulture and enology, agriculture, and food science programs, and aims to address the dearth of tea-related scholarship worldwide.
